On Wednesday 5th July, the NHS will turn 75 years old. The Students’ Union would like to take a moment to thank all the students, staff and alumni that have dedicated their time over the years to providing the best care possible to the millions of patients that access NHS services every day.

The NHS was founded in 1948 and was the first universal healthcare system to be available to all, with a commitment to being free at the point of use. It revolutionised the delivery of healthcare across the UK and has been a key part of many of our lives for as long as we can remember.

Here at UCLan, we have thousands of students studying to become a key part of the NHS’s future workforce. From Medicine to Nursing, Midwifery to Counselling, our students work hard every day to ensure that patients continue to experience the highest quality of care. Many of our students played a key part during the pandemic, providing extra support for the NHS during a time of crisis and putting their own health and lives at risk.

The influence of the NHS on our student community is reflected in the sheer number of societies we have here at the Students’ Union dedicated to fields of medicine and healthcare that are covered by NHS. These groups provide a sense of belonging, community and support that helps to prepare students to enter their respective fields by sharing knowledge and boosting networks whilst studying.

Our student groups change all the time, but here’s a list of just some of the groups that we would like to spotlight to celebrate such a milestone in the history of public healthcare in Britain. Please note that you will only be able to join these societies from August.
