Your Big Ideas

Do you have an Idea about how to make the Students’ Union, University or the wider community better for students?

Your Big Ideas are a great way to make meaningful change on campus. Submit your Idea online and share with your friends and course mates. If your Big Idea achieves 50 or more votes in favour after 28 days, it will be taken forward; either to an appropriate meeting such as Students’ Council or by meeting with the appropriate person(s) to help make your idea a reality. If a Big Idea gets approval at Students’ Council, it will become Students’ Union policy and we will work with you on making it happen!

To submit an Idea or vote on any of the current Big Ideas below, you must be logged in using your UCLan student login. Once logged in, the option to submit will appear and to vote, just click the thumbs up or down button - depending on your opinion!

Previous Big Ideas-turned reality have included free period provisions on campus, an extension to the academic calendar and free disability screening.

Anyone can submit a Big Idea. It’s an easy way to change the lives of students!

A True 24-hour Preston Library - Not just a study space

    Current

We, the students of UCLan, believe that unrestricted access to the full library facilities is essential for our academic success, particularly for those who rely on flexible hours to accommodate work, family, and other commitments. Until this academic year, the entire library was open 24 hours, providing access to study rooms, quiet spaces (with computers), and the full collection of books. However, under the new restrictions, only the ground floor is accessible between midnight and 7 am, limiting our ability to study effectively during these hours.

The ground floor lacks the necessary resources, such as group study rooms, quiet spaces, and the book collection, which are critical for comprehensive study. This change unfairly impacts those who need a quiet space, access to research materials, or collaborative areas during late-night hours. It also contradicts UCLan’s commitment to supporting student success by providing an accessible learning environment around the clock.

We call on the university to reinstate full 24/7 access to all library floors. We urge the university to prioritize student needs by making the entire library accessible at all hours, allowing every student to thrive in their studies. Let’s restore the resources we need to succeed—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our library isn’t just a study space, it’s a resource.

12:45pm on 22 Oct 24 Agreed. They were able to do this last year so should be able to do this again. I would be happy if even just the ground and first floor was kept open so that people could use quiet floor to study, but closing everything other than the ground floor seems extreme.

6:21pm on 30 Oct 24 The decision to close the library at 12 p.m. is unacceptable and shows a disregard for the needs of the student body. Many of us rely on the library in the afternoons and evenings due to class schedules, jobs, and other responsibilities. This decision directly hinders our ability to study effectively and impacts our academic performance. Our recent vote to overturn this decision reflects a unified frustration with the lack of consideration given to students. We DEMAND that the library hours be fully reinstated to support all students, not just those available in the mornings. A university committed to its students should ensure access to essential academic resources, not restrict them. We expect this matter to be resolved.

1:27am on 3 Nov 24 But the ammount of students who use it at night simply aren't worth the money it costs to run it? I've been at night a fair few times and there's always less than 15, and if the university is already on its arse like most unis and need to save money then why not cut an underused resource to maintain other services that are more used? In an ideal world then 100% I'd want it all open but my last uni had its library flat out closed due to budget restraints so in context I'm just happy we have a 24 hour library at all.
