To be able to vote in the upcoming Election, either in person, by post or by proxy, you must register to vote!
You can register online or via post. If you choose to register online (which we think may be easiest as the Election is quite close) you just need 5 minutes and your National Insurance number. You can find out more information on the Electoral Commission website here.
The voter registration deadline is Friday 11th April 2025. This is the very last day you’ll be able to register to vote for the Local Election.

Students living at University
As students, you may be able to register to vote at both your home address and your term-time address. However, this does not necessarily mean that you can vote more than once in elections taking place on the same day - You will need to choose one address and vote in only that area.

International Students and Voting
We understand that some of our international students may be wondering if they’re eligible to vote in this Election, and whilst many of you reside in the UK to study, not all of our students will be able to vote.

Postal Vote
If you can’t make it to your local polling station on the day, whether that’s because you currently live abroad, you’re on holiday or you can’t access a polling station, you can apply to cast your vote by post.
You’ll need to apply by Monday 14th April 2025 - this is the very last day you’ll be able to register for a postal vote.
Apply to vote by Post
It’s important to make sure you fill out all of your details correctly and follow the instructions sent to you. To make your vote count, it must reach the elections team at your local council by 10pm on polling day to be counted.
Proxy Vote
If you can’t make it to your local polling station on the day, whether that’s because you currently live abroad, you’re on holiday or you can’t access a polling station, you can apply to cast your vote by proxy. This means to nominate and register a trusted person to vote on your behalf. This person must be eligible and registered to vote in UK elections and able to visit your local polling station on the day.
You’ll need to apply by Wednesday 23rd April 2025 - this is the very last day you’ll be able to register for a proxy vote.

Understanding Your Voting Rights as part of the Trans* and Non-Binary community
Trans and non-binary individuals have the same voting rights as any other citizen. Your gender identity should not impact your ability to register to vote or cast your ballot. Your gender identity is valid regardless of legal documentation. You do not need to have updated ID documents reflecting your gender identity to register to vote or participate in the electoral process.
When registering to vote, you can use your chosen name and gender identity, even if it differs from the name and gender marker on your official documents. The Electoral Commission recognizes that individuals may register under their acquired gender identity.
If you have changed your name or gender marker and wish to update your details on the electoral roll, contact your local electoral registration office. They can advise you on the process for updating your information.
