Governance - UCLan Students' Union Trustee Board

Completed

Led the recruitment for a permanent Chief Executive for UCLan Students' Union with the Deputy Chair of UCLan Students' Union Board Jill Wells. We selected Peridot Partners as our executive search firm who work across the third sector. I'm pleased with the support we received from Bill Yuksel and delighted to have Stefanie Hartley starting with us as our new CEO in February 2022. I'm currently working with Bill from Peridot Partners to put together a guide to support Officers leading CEO recruitments in other Students’ Unions.

Created a new recruitment pack for external trustee recruitment and recruited 3 new industry professionals to the Board with experiences in financial management, human resources and change management. One of our new trustees is a UCLan Alumna!

Created a new recruitment pack for student trustees and recruited 5 new student trustees with a couple from Mathematics and Finance and Accounting degrees to help close the board skills gap. I am also pleased to have further diverse student representation on the Board from mature students at our Burnley campus and from an International student perspective.

I've done a lot of interviews this semester, revised interview questions and become a lot more confident leading recruitments. Thanks to all staff and students who were involved in the Chief Executive recruitment sessions. It has been an enjoyable experience and I will take many learnings with me into future roles.

I look forward to supporting the onboarding process for the new Chief Executive, external and student trustees in the new year.

*Personal News*

I have enjoyed my roles as Chair of UCLan Students' Union Board and Governor on the University of Central Lancashire Board. I am pleased to continue my Board experience beyond my role as Students' Union President as a trustee on the Board of Active Lancashire. Active Lancashire is the strategic lead for Sport and Physical Activity in Lancashire and I look forward to using my skills and experience to help the organisation achieve it's goal - to embed sport and physical activity into all aspects of everyday life.

Improving the International Student Experience

Improving the International Student Experience

in progress

Following the results of the International Student Experience Survey in July, it became clear that more needs to be done to ensure international students are provided with accurate information prior to arrival into the UK/UCLan and consistent communication throughout their studies to mitigate the issues faced by the University and the students.

On 11th November 4pm-6pm, I hosted a further opportunity for International students to get their voice heard. The Elected Officers and the Representation Team held an International Students Get Together in Source to discuss key issues and hot food was served.

We had under 60 students from a variety of countries engage in the event discussing their highlights and challenges on 3 key topics:

- Welcome and Induction

- Academic Support

- Sense of Belonging and Community

We collated the findings and recommendations from our survey and focus groups as well as the Pearson and Wonkhe Belonging research. Me and VP Education presented on the topic of the International Student Experience at UCLan to the Students, Teaching and Quality Committee and have presented to the Faculty of Science and Technology.

We will be presenting to the School of Management and the Faculty Clinical and Biomedical Sciences in April.

*UNIVERSITY PROGRESS*

The Director of International Recruitment and Director of Student Services have come together to create 4 key workstreams which seek to improve the international student experience. Elected Officers will be involved in one workstream each with SU staff support. These workstreams will look at:

  • Accommodation - VP Activities
  • Finance - President
  • Academic Misconduct - VP Education
  • English Language - VP Welfare

We are pleased to see the University leading this work and trying a new collaborative approach between two University departments.

Employability and Opportunities to Connect

Employability and Opportunities to Connect

in progress

In November, I took a group of MBA international students to a Careers 2032 Roundtable - Reimaginging the future of Career Services. The research is a collaborative piece between AGCAS, WonkHE, ISE and Handshake. We spent 2 hours sharing our thoughts for the study considering the role HE institutions, employers and students will play in the landscape, with Careers Services as the lynchpin of success. It was great to see students from Chester and Manchester Metropolitan get involved in the research and we look forward to reading through the findings in the new year.

It has been great to see Employability Leads in certain Schools hosting their own career talks bringing in former Alumni to share their experiences and inspire with current students.

Financial Support

in progress

I raised international students' concerns with Student Services in 2020/21 and secured support for international students beyond the Overseas Student Hardship Fund for 2021/22. This will be made available to international students from October should they face any unexpected financial emergency such as funeral costs or a sudden house move. If you are experiencing an unexpected financial emergency, please email HardshipFund@uclan.ac.uk

For more information on what financial support is available for UK/EU/International students, visit this link via the Student Hub.

Alumni Support

in progress

In 2022 I will represent students on UCLan's Alumni Engagement Forum which will allow the Students' Union to influence Alumni activities. I look forward to feeding students' ideas into this group to improve the current offering. The idea is to support current students with the experiences Alumni can share and enable graduates to access improved Alumni benefits.

We currently have a Big Idea that a current student has submitted to give all students who graduate an Alumni Card. I will be supporting students to bring these ideas to life.
