Following the results of the International Student Experience Survey in July, it became clear that more needs to be done to ensure international students are provided with accurate information prior to arrival into the UK/UCLan and consistent communication throughout their studies to mitigate the issues faced by the University and the students.
On 11th November 4pm-6pm, I hosted a further opportunity for International students to get their voice heard. The Elected Officers and the Representation Team held an International Students Get Together in Source to discuss key issues and hot food was served.
We had under 60 students from a variety of countries engage in the event discussing their highlights and challenges on 3 key topics:
- Welcome and Induction
- Academic Support
- Sense of Belonging and Community
We collated the findings and recommendations from our survey and focus groups as well as the Pearson and Wonkhe Belonging research. Me and VP Education presented on the topic of the International Student Experience at UCLan to the Students, Teaching and Quality Committee and have presented to the Faculty of Science and Technology.
We will be presenting to the School of Management and the Faculty Clinical and Biomedical Sciences in April.
The Director of International Recruitment and Director of Student Services have come together to create 4 key workstreams which seek to improve the international student experience. Elected Officers will be involved in one workstream each with SU staff support. These workstreams will look at:
- Accommodation - VP Activities
- Finance - President
- Academic Misconduct - VP Education
- English Language - VP Welfare
We are pleased to see the University leading this work and trying a new collaborative approach between two University departments.
