Initiations

An 'Initiation' is the act of admitting someone into a group typically with a ritual. It is a rite of passage marking entrance/acceptance into a group.  Often these Initiations are thought as a harmless rite of passage for Club members and is embed into the tradition of the Club however this behaviour is classed as bullying which is forbidden within the University.

If any student feels under pressure to be involved in an initiation or coerced into freshers hazing, you can make a complaint. Hazing is any activity which involved humiliation, harassment, or abuse.

At UCLan Students' Union we want all our students to be able to get involved in a safe and inclusive environment.

The risks behind initiations are often overlooked and students are in denial of the serious health problems they could cause.  As a Students' Union, we cannot control the social activities of Sports Clubs and Societies however we can emphasise the importance of individuals taking responsibility. Not only can initiations cause serious health hazards, they can only effect students' mental health.

Inclusion

This year I want to focus and emphasis the importance of inclusion within our teams. We need to break down barriers and ensure we are creating a positive safe environment for all our students participating in sport. It has been proven that students who are involved in sport are more likely to stay at university and complete their course, as well as the mental health benefits associated with exercise and the opportunity for students to make friends.

Positive Club Culture

Positive club culture can be implemented in many ways. This year we want to encourage supportive conversations about mental health ensuring our students are supported throughout their university journey.

Breakdown barriers of participation by keeping social activities accessible and appropriate for all members, offer a variety of training opportunities for different levels of ability,

It’s important all students feel comfortable and safe in their sporting environment. Together we must focus on making all our teams at UCLan SU inclusive for everyone.
