UCU Strike Action Update: Suspension of upcoming strike dates
We were aware that the UCLan branch of UCU had recently voted to go on strike in a dispute over job losses.
There were six dates for strike action planned by UCU including: 25 and 26 March and 15, 16, 19, 20 April.
Last week, the Elected Officers spoke with members of the University’s Vice Chancellor’s Group and also wrote to UCU to understand both positions surrounding the issue.
As your Students’ Union, our main priority was to ensure students would not suffer further detriment to their education, especially as studies and experiences so far have been so disrupted due to the pandemic.
We also asked to be involved with any processes or plans that would be put into place to mitigate any detriment if the strikes were to go ahead.
Fortunately, as a result of resolution talks between the UCU and the University, the UCU have now agreed to suspend the planned industrial action.
We welcome a resolution, and hope that both parties can reach a final agreement. We are pleased to hear that disruption to students’ learning and teaching is being minimised.
Your VP Education Steph said: “I am personally thrilled that our students’ education is no longer at risk due to circumstances out of their own hands, besides the pandemic. It has already been a difficult year and the next few months are a key part of the academic year as students prepare for assessments and exams.”
We will continue to stay in contact with UCLan UCU and the University to seek further information about any future plans, and guidance in place to ease any potential impact on students’ teaching and assessments.
