A Statement from the Elected Officer Team Raham – President, Nikita – VP Education and Nitam – VP Welfare
First and foremost, we as the Students’ Union would like to extend our reassurances to students that as your Union, we uphold a zero-tolerance approach towards Anti-Semitism.
We wanted to address the resurfaced events within the National Union of Students (NUS), that relates to the dismissal of the former NUS President and recent reports of breached policies.
Recently, NUS released the report from an independent investigation looking at recent allegations of antisemitism, as well as historic matters and broader culture, within NUS and the wider student movement. You can read the report and NUS’ action plan on how they’ll be doing more for Anti-Semitism on their website here.
The Students’ Union recognises the importance of our Jewish community here at UCLan and we want to affirm you by saying we have been, and will continue to work, in collaboration with the University to create an environment that holds its institution and community within it accountable to their practices.
We have played a key role in the Institutional Review of Racial Equality and Anti-Semitism, which was established based on recent racist and Anti-Semitic cases that occurred within the University.
Key actions from the Institutional review consist of the following:
- Establish institutional protocols for internal and external communication when dealing with critical cases.
- Update the University recruitment and selection process ensuring the engagement of the equality, diversity, and inclusion team.
- Review and improve the protocols for the management of critical incidents.
You can read more on our response to the University’s review here.
These actions have been taken into working groups that have been formed to ensure UCLan and the Students’ Union create an environment that is more welcoming to students from different cultures and religions.
For our Jewish community, we will be planning coffee mornings for those students to come together. We hope from these events, our Jewish students begin to build a community at UCLan and hopefully we see a Jewish Students Society created for students to join and truly feel like they belong to a community they love and are a part of.
As the Students’ Union, we exist to empower students and amplify their voice. If there is something as a student you would like to feedback on, or you’d like to talk to us more about the NUS investigation or the UCLan Institutional Review of Racial Equality and Anti-Semitism please get in touch – yourunion@uclan.ac.uk.
