Happy Pride Month!

Pride month is all about celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and raising awareness for the experiences of the community and advocating for equality. This month and every month we stand and support everyone from the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride has come a long way to bring people together in friendship and love to improve the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. This month celebrates how far the community has come, as well as highlighting the work that still needs to be done. The Pride movement and celebrations of colourful parades and marches spread the word that you should be proud of who you are no matter who you love.

The history of Pride month began as a commemoration of the Stonewall riots in New York in June 1969 with the UK’s first Pride march taking place on July 1st 1972. Although Pride comes in the form of a party and celebration of who we are, we must remember it is also a protest against unjust systems and to raise awareness for continuous change and improvement of inclusivity within communities.

The Students’ Union is an inclusive and welcoming space for all students to advocate for and educate on the LGBTQ+ community. Our LGBTQ+ society and Trans* Society are two great ways to connect and interact with other members of the community in a friendly, welcoming environment for both members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies. The societies host events such as bowling and food and drinks each month, as well as fostering goodwill for the community through charity work and host workshops to educate others and bring communities together. You can sign up to be a part of the societies from August as soon as you have enrolled at the University.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to campus in September with a Pride Parade during Freshers Week.
