The Students’ Union are currently working with the School of Nursing to help provide a better sense of belonging and community for male identifying students studying a nursing course at UCLan.

With only 11% of NHS nurses identifying as male, we understand that being a male nurse comes with unique challenges and expectations, and we want to help provide a safe space for our male nursing students to thrive during their time at University.

Feedback from students brought to us by the Nursing School Presidents has played a huge part in the development of this new network. It has brought to light some of the issues that disproportionately affect male students as a consequence of the stigma surrounding Nursing as a profession.

For now, we are piloting the new “Men In Nursing Network” with the creation of a Microsoft Teams space for students to come together, share their ideas and experiences and boost their network of friends studying nursing at UCLan. The group is open to students studying at Burnley, Westlakes and Preston. It is our hope that the Teams space will help to lay the foundations of the Network so that it can grow into something that is completely student led in the future.

As a Union, we’d love to hear from students who might like to take more of a leadership role within the network, working with us to organise campaigns, events and social opportunities to grow the community of male nurses  We’re also looking at how we can help to welcome nursing students who will be joining us in September, and are keen to hear your ideas.

You can join the new Microsoft Teams space for UCLan’s Men In Nursing Networking by using the join code (9ipwgw3), and if you’d like to find more about how you can be involved, use the Teams channel to get in contact or email c.burke5@UCLan.ac.uk
