Bronze Hedgehog Friendly Campus Accreditation
Over the past year, our Hedgehog Friendly Campus Inspiring Project has been hard at work trying to make the Preston campus as safe as possible for hedgehogs. All the hard work has been rewarded with official bronze accreditation from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).
The project got involved with some great events over the past few months which included:
- Taking part in a national litter pick competition and coming in second place!
- Running a campaign to highlight the dangers of bonfires
- Spreading awareness around hedgehog first aid
- Meeting with the UCLan grounds team to discuss ways to protect hedgehogs on campus
But the activity doesn’t stop there! The Inspiring Project will now be carrying on the important work and aiming for silver accreditation from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
In the coming months, there will be a number of great activities to get involved with as part of the project, such as:
- Conducting hedgehog and pond surveys on campus
- Promoting National Hedgehog Awareness Week
- Creating hedgehog houses and habitats
…and much more!

Hedgehog Friendly Campus is a national accreditation programme funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). We’re always looking for students to sign up and volunteer to help turn our campus into a Hedgehog Friendly Campus! Universities and colleges up and down the country are taking part to help bring hedgehogs back from the point of extinction.
Volunteering for any of our Inspiring Projects means you’ll be eligible to work towards the Livesey Award! This award recognises your hard work and efforts as a volunteer and can even be included on your HEAR transcript when you graduate.
