The Great Donate

Great Donate

Every year when students leave UCLan, hundreds of perfectly good household items are thrown away and end up in landfill.

The Great Donate is an initiative to make better use of common household items traditionally thrown away by students when they leave university, by saving them for new and returning students. Not only does this prevent them from ending up in landfill, but it means students don’t have to spend large chunks of their student loan buying new household equipment when they arrive at UCLan.

We will be collecting pots, pans, plates and more and selling them (very cheaply) to students during the September and January Welcome Weeks. Any money raised from this scheme will go back into the student experience.

Now that the academic year is drawing to a close, no doubt many students will be starting to move out for the summer. Got something you can’t take with you? Why not leave it for the Great Donate!

You can drop off the accepted items between 9am and 5pm to the Students’ Union Ground Floor (Welcome Desk or Engagement Team office).

Please donate clean, working items that are in good condition. We withhold the right to turn any items away due to their condition or safety concerns.

We accept:

  • Pots, Pans and Baking trays
  • Plates, Bowls
  • Cups, Glasses and Mugs
  • Cutlery
  • Other utensils (Chopping Boards, Mixing Bowls, Whisks, Spatulas etc…)
  • Stationary
  • Trinkets and Décor
  • Non-perishable Food (Tins)
  • Unused/unopened Toiletries and Hygiene products.

Kindly we do not accept:

  • Electrical equipment
  • Bedding
  • Anything broken, cracked or chipped
  • Sharp objects, such as Chopping Knives (Butter Knives accepted)
  • Wooden items
  • Clothing

We’re not taking clothes currently, but if you wish to donate any unwanted clothing there is a donation point near the entrance at the bottom floor of the Students’ Union building.

If you have any questions or you would like to volunteer to be part of the Great Donate over summer or in the new academic year, please email SUVolunteering@UCLan.ac.uk.
