Candidate for the position of Cheerleading - Vice Chair

Jessica Mathew

Hi, I’m Jess and I think I would be a great vice chair for UCLan Tigers. I’m in my first year and couldn’t think of a better way to balance university life.

I’ve never done cheer and was anxious about starting but the friends I’ve made and the experiences I’ve gained are invaluable. I was a gymnast for 11 years and coached at City of Preston Gymnastics where I’d spend many weekends helping gymnasts with routines & tumbles.

It took me some time to adjust into university, but cheer really helped me to make friends. Socials seemed scary going out with people I didn’t know but I can’t think of a time I’d ever felt left out.  My favourite part of being on the team so far has been the coach rides to all the competitions we’ve been to. I love how energetic we are together as a team, and I’d love to keep that going!

I’d like to think of myself as an approachable person, though this is my first time doing cheer I’d like to show freshers how much fun it can be when you put yourself out there (my returners know the love i have for them) I cannot wait for another year with my amazing team. I know to keep the morale of my team high during stressful times in training and competitions, for us and our coach, making sure everyone is calm, ready and ofcourse enjoying themselves!

To another memory-filled year with my Tigers.

Jess.
