Over the past few months, UCLan Students’ Union President Zuleikha Chikh, School President for Medicine Hugo Labat and Course Rep Sulaymaan Al Majid have been working collaboratively on supporting MBBS students who travel to Burnley for lectures/placements. Thank you to all students who took part in the Medical School Transport Survey and provided feedback to help the University better understand the financial pressures you are facing.

From the survey’s results we found that many international students parents’ businesses had been impacted due to the pandemic, students had lost part-time jobs in hospitality/retail and were struggling to eat healthily due to having to make their money stretch between groceries and commuting costs.

UCLan Students’ Union President Zuleikha Chikh said “COVID-19 has had a huge impact on students’ finances and we are pleased to be working with the University on supporting students who are experiencing financial hardship. This bursary will go some way to help our students for study purposes.”

In order to qualify for the MBBS Burnley Travel Bursary, students must meet the following criteria:

1. You must be a student in Years 3,4 or 5 of the MBBS course
2. You must either be living in Preston and travelling to our Burnley campus
3. If you are not living in Preston, you must provide evidence that it costs you more to travel to Burnley Campus than to travel to Preston Campus. Students who have made a conscious decision to live in further away will not be considered for the bursary.

You will need to provide proof of mode and cost of travel e.g. receipts, petrol receipts as well as evidence of tenancy at the application stage, so please have this ready before you apply.

Applications open on Monday 4^th January 2021 and will remain open for the rest of the academic term.
