Earlier this semester, we asked students to nominate great teaching and professional service staff at UCLan Burnley for the Burnley Golden Roses. Since the close of nominations, a student-led panel met virtually to read through the truly amazing nominations from Burnley students.
The amount of fantastic nominations meant it was a tough panel to be a part of this year. We’d like to say a special thank you to these students for their time and commitment to the Golden Roses process.
We’re very excited to reveal this year’s shortlist for Burnley Golden Roses for the following categories; Creative Teaching Award, Lecturer of the Year and Above and Beyond.
Creative Teaching Award
Dr Michael Joseph Porter has made this year's shortlist as his sessions are always fun and engaging, for using new methods of teaching and not overwhelming students. This has not gone unnoticed during this new way of learning for their students.
Cheryl Gordon has made online learning for their students interactive with the use of apps and new teaching styles, this has been appreciated by students and found them a place on this year’s shortlist. Along with being a genuine and down to earth approachable staff member.
Chukwuemka Ibechu this staff member always goes the extra mile when it comes to teaching and they have found themselves on the shortlist for this reason. They always use creative, different techniques and are incredibly skilled at keeping students engaged which hasn’t gone unnoticed. Students said they lively committed staff member who has made online learning easier.
Above and Beyond Award
Andreas Phillipou has been a very active, engaged member of staff this academic year, especially when it comes to student’s wellbeing. A spot on the shortlist was destined for this staff member due to welcoming and warm lectures, useful revision sessions and the encouragement they offer to students and support to meet their goals and aims.
Nussrat Kazemi had lots of students expressing how much they deserved this award. They are a great member of staff who has helped students through difficult times and is one of the reasons they find themselves on the shortlist. Students said they are constant source of support and motivation whilst being approachable and friendly. They strive to be there for students especially in these unprecedented times.
Lecturer of the Year Award
Chukwuemka Ibechu is on the shortlist for a second time for being a genuine, fabulous and sincere member of staff. This goes further than their amazing style of teaching and desire to motivate students to do their best, they also care about their student's wellbeing, which is so important and recognised. One student said they bring light and laughter to lectures whilst making sure students are still learning in the best way possible.
Jena Farrar-Armiger has been shortlisted for being an amazing lecturer who goes out of their way to find the answer for any question asked. Described as a supportive staff member who’s students appreciate and value how responsive they are to messages, especially whilst working from home.
John Edmundson bringing lectures to life has found a place on the shortlist for this staff member. Students describe the passion they have for their profession as this is reflected in the training provided to their students. A super kind person who always offers help, makes lectures fun, and always wears a smile.
Lawrence Nike Barrera Briceno has been described as hands down one of the nicest and most genuine people the student has ever met. This has led to a spot on the shortlist along with being helpful with query’s and always having a smile on their face. Their enthusiasm to teach has a positive ripple effect leaving their students excited to learn.
Thank you to all students who took the time to nominate a staff member for an award, in difficult times it’s wonderful to see all the positivity and appreciation shared in each nomination. We will ensure all staff nominated receive a copy of their nominations.
The Burnley Golden Roses winners will be revealed on 5th May in a video celebration.
