In February 2020, we will be holding our fourth annual Volunteer Leadership Camp where we will be taking a group of up to 30 Students’ Union volunteers away on a FREE residential to Guy’s Farm Activity Centre, near Lancaster, for further training and development. Attending this camp will be a great opportunity to reflect on your experiences as volunteers, meet new people and develop your skills. For more information, keep reading!
We will be giving you the chance to take part in lots of outdoor activities such as team puzzles and archery as well as training sessions designed to further develop your understanding and support you in your volunteering.
The camp will run from 10am on Monday 17th to approx. 3pm on Tuesday 18th February 2020 – which is during Reflection Week. The camp is an overnight residential however if you can only attend for one of the days or don’t wish to stay overnight that is absolutely fine too, just let us know! All meals, transport and accommodation are provided free of charge. Don’t forget you will also be able to log this time towards your Livesey Award.
Don't take our word for it, hear what some of last year's Volunteer Leadership Camp attendees had to say.
“Last year I had the pleasure of attending the leadership training camp. I thoroughly enjoyed it as I was able to meet with like-minded students and we had a great deal of fun. There’s even a video floating around of me going face-first into the pond during the raft building exercise – which was the highlight of the two days for me. I’ve since gone on to become a student trustee within the Students’ Union, and the training given during the leadership training camp has been invaluable to me. If you get the chance to go, definitely do it.” - Dean Kamitsis
“The leadership camp gave me skills that I can use as part of my career development. I met people that are now good friends and I volunteer with them. The camp was much more suited to my learning style than a regular lecture.” – Katy Prior
Applications are now open and the deadline to apply is 9am on the 27th January, however we are encouraging students to apply before Christmas. To apply for a place, you should fill out the short application form found and explain why you feel you would benefit from this fantastic experience. All volunteers are guaranteed an interview for a place on the trip, and we will let you know by the 10th Feb whether you’ve been successful or not.
Unfortunately, anyone who has previously attended is not eligible to reapply. However, we have a brand new opportunity for previous Volunteer Leadership Camp participants to deliver a training session at this year’s camp. This will not only help you develop your skills further but you can pass on knowledge that you think will benefit this year’s participants in their volunteering. You might choose a topic we’ve previously taught a session on such as: roles in a team; communicating effectively; handling conflict; different leadership styles; motivating and inspiring others; or emotional intelligence. Or you might have a brand new idea for a session you think is missing from the camp or is important for volunteers to learn. We will work with you to develop your session, and can help you lead it too if you like. Fill out the form , and we’ll select the best idea(s) to come along with us. Please note, this opportunity is only open to previous VLC attendees. The deadline for submitting ideas is 9am on Monday 2nd December.
