Olympic Torch Relay
It has been confirmed that Fishergate will be the main spectator site for people to watch the Olympic Flame as it travels through Preston.
Prestonians are being urged to come and watch a piece of history and share in the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay on Saturday 23 June. As the torch passes through the city centre the streets will be animated through dance and musical performances. On the day there will be the chance to participate in the Big Dance, a celebration of Lancashire Dance as part of Preston Guild 2012. The day will start with a 'Wake Up, Warm Up' led by dancers from Ludus Dance Company and a variety of diverse dance performances including the premier of the Lancashire Big Dance featuring 250 dancers from across the county. Everyone is invited to take part in the grand finale of the day - an inclusive mass dance performance at Preston Flag Market!
This free event will take place from 8am until 12noon, come rain or shine!
It’s not too late to be a part of this celebration and register your interest using the ‘I want to dance’ link on www.prestonguild2012.com homepage.
Leader of Preston City Council, Councillor Peter Rankin, said: “Quite simply this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Flame pass through Preston. It is a piece of history and for it to be happening in Guild year makes it that little bit more exciting.
“I hope many people will line the route along Fishergate and join in the Big Dance to celebrate this exciting, unique event.”
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG added: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Preston’s moment to shine".
