Guild Communities Procession
We're currently recruiting volunteers to form our vibrant and colourful walking float as a part of the Preston Guild Community Procession in September.
There is a meeting on 8th May at 12pm for anyone interested in taking part or helping put together our procession. We need artistic volunteers and volunteers to be walkers in the procession to come forward.
What is Preston Guild?
Preston Guild is a historic celebration dating back to 1179. It is the only Guild still celebrated in the UK and as such is unique. The 2012 celebration will be the first Guild in the 21st century and the first since the granting of Preston’s city status in 2002. Held only once every twenty years, the Guild plays an important role in the development of Preston as a thriving and important Lancashire city.
What is the Community Procession?
The 2012 Community Procession provides a showcase to all the diverse communities which make Preston a great place to live, work, study and play. The procession takes place Friday 7th September 2012 and the Students’ Union will be part of it.
We have a ‘walking float’ of 100 people parading through the city with other community groups and organisations. Our theme is ‘Un-Demo’ – we’ll be carrying handmade flags, banners and placards ‘protesting’ about all the great things we do as a Union so you’ll see things about our Sports Clubs and Societies, Student Media, Volunteering and Jobs, student democracy and representation and our other services.
Your opportunity to be part of it!
‘Un-Demo Protestors’ – Procession Walkers
We have 100 places for people to walk with us through the procession route and we need volunteers to come forward to be one of those people. Anyone student on any course can take part, just email us here (SUCLubsandsocs@uclan.ac.uk) to register.
If you are skilled in music, dance or performance and think you could help us to ‘animate’ our procession with something a little bit creative, please come forward too. Note: We will not have a lorry float so anything we do needs to be portable and able to move with the walkers.
Artists
We need volunteers who are artistic, who enjoy drawing and painting or stitching and collaging, to help us create a series of colourful banners, flags and placards to represent the Union for the walking procession.
We would like to start creating these in early May ‘12 and work on them over the early summer period and the start of Guild week. You may even take them home to work on if you are not staying in Preston over the summer.
The SU will supply the resources and materials. All we need from you is some time, some ideas and the ability to realise them in an artistic medium. To apply, simply send us a few examples of your work and your contact details to SUClubsandsocs@uclan.ac.uk
Guild Meeting for Volunteers
