Games and Guild Sports Day
Teams of students took part in a range of disability sports, including: Goal Ball, Boccia and Wheelchair Basketball.
Over 60 students took part in the Students’ Union’s Games & Guild Sports Day over at Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre. The afternoon opened with an Olympic-themed dance, choreographed and performed by students on the University’s Dance degree. The dance subtly incorporated elements of Olympic sports and provided a great start to the afternoon’s activities.
Jack Banks, Activities & Participation Officer 2011-12, said “The afternoon was great. I didn’t realise how hard some disability sports are to play but everyone who tried them out thoroughly enjoyed themselves. And we discovered how awesome Wheelchair Basketball is!”.
Gillian Lynes, Games & Guild Ambassador, said “We put on the Sports Day to raise people’s awareness about disability sport and the Paralympics. It was amazing to see so many able-bodied and disabled students having a go at a sport they may never have done before. Sports 4 U and Preston Panthers were great at putting the day together and getting people organised. And all the Games & Guild volunteers put in a lot of effort to recruit participants and make the day successful”.
The Sports Day was the start of the Students’ Union’s activities to mark the special events of 2012 – Preston Guild and the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Joseph Cooper, Volunteering & Employability Manager said ‘The Union are running other Games & Guild activities over the course of the year for students to get involved with. In particular, we are recruiting students to be part of our Guild walking procession. We need artistic students to help us create a series of banners and flags for the procession and students to be part of the procession”.
The London 2012 Olympics takes place between 27 July-12 Aug 2012 and the Paralympics between 29 Aug-9 Sept 2012. Preston Guild runs between 31st August to 9th Sept. Preston Guild are still recruiting for volunteers. For details visit: http://www.prestonguild2012.com/volunteering
