Course Reps
Course Representation
Have you got something to say about your course? Becoming a course representative is a great way to make a difference, not only on your course but to your student experience, and potentially influence its direction and content. The reason you’re at UCLan is to learn, and the Union want to make sure the university does its best to support you each step of the way. Becoming a course rep means you are a vital liaison point between staff and students, and you can make sure that your course mates can have their say.
Becoming a Rep
To become a rep, you need to let your course leader know as soon as possible. Elections will take place at the beginning of semester one. If you don’t hear anything, ask your tutor. Once you are elected, you will attend a training session run by the Union which will guide you through your role. You’ll then attend SSLC meetings (Student Staff Liaison Committee), usually with your course leader, tutors and your SLO to discuss the views of the students. The Union will be there throughout the year to offer you support and advice, so feel free to drop in and see the Education Officer anytime in the SAC office (first floor of the Union).
What did last year’s reps say?
“I enjoyed being a course rep because it gave me an opportunity to get problems solved for the people on my course and feel like a useful part of the class. It's a great system for getting issues out in the open that classmates might not want to raise on their own. Also it gave me an insight into the way that UCLan runs behind the scenes.”- 2nd Year Rep
“I really enjoyed my time as a student rep for two main reasons. Firstly, knowing what is going on in uni, and secondly having the ability to speak about mine and others’ concerns made me feel like part of the uni.” - 1st Year Rep
“I think it was useful to be able to voice my fellow collegues’ views to our tutors and be able to give them feedback efficiently. Generally for me I just like to know what's going on, and been able to get on with it really, see that issues are addressed etc.” - 2nd Year Rep
“Being a course rep was a great way to find out more about my course. It felt good to know that the uni was taking into account what the students were saying. It’s also made me a lot more confident, especially when speaking in meetings, which is going to be useful in the future!” - 3rd Year Rep
Course Rep Academy
This year, we’re introducing the Course Rep Academy, a new awards scheme that’ll give you the chance to learn valuable skills such as Public Speaking, Networking and Leadership. Not only will it give you the opportunity to work a lot more closely with the union, but it also offers you essential employability skills, giving you that extra boost when looking for jobs. It’s also a great way to meet new people, share best practice and make some new friends. More information will be available at training.

Hello! I’m Becca, and I’m the Education Officer. Course Reps play a massive part in the way we work with courses. There are around 30,000 students at UCLan, and it’s difficult to speak to every single one. Course Reps are there to bridge that gap between us and courses and to find out where there are issues (and things that are being done well!) so we can work to improve them, making the student experience more enjoyable for everyone. It also helps us build our campaigns that will create change across the whole institution. Getting involved is a great way to shape your education, and I can vouch for that, I was a Course Rep for three years!
