Volunteering

The truly great thing about volunteering is that it is fun, varied and you get to meet lots of new people. You could volunteer to work with people who are homelessness and help at a local soup kitchen, you could take a dog for a walk once a week from the local dog shelter, or you could put on an event to help raise awareness about environmental issues. The possibilities are endless, and there are many volunteer involving organisations in the Preston area who would really appreciate you as a volunteer.

However, you don’t need to travel too far to do volunteering, because here at the Students’ Union we provide numerous volunteering opportunities that make a big difference and allow you to gain some valuable experiences and transferable skills.

Course Reps – Every year two volunteers are elected from each course who to undertake the responsibility of liaising with academic staff at course meetings and reporting the views, grievances, problems and successes of their fellow student classmates. Course Reps also attend regular meetings with the University staff and the Student Liaison Officers. The Students’ Union offers full training and support and rewards our Course Reps with a certificate and a few Students’ Union perks including social events and a Course Rep Awards Night.

Faculty Reps – Four volunteers are elected from among the Course Reps in each faculty to represent the views and opinions of students from their faculty at Student Council meetings which takes place once a month. This is a great way to have input into the way you wish your Students’ Union to be run as well as making sure that the students in your faculty are represented in any decisions made.

If you would like further information about becoming a Course or Faculty Rep, please email Peta Carter, the Education Officer at: sueducation@uclan.ac.uk

Clubs & Societies Committee VolunteersAll clubs and societies are run by volunteers who fulfil the positions of Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, although some clubs and societies often have other positions like Club Captains and Social Secretaries. These positions are elected each year in April by the groups’ members and are a great way to build up your CV. There is also the opportunity for group members to run for the Clubs and Societies Council Committee positions.

If you would like further information about these volunteer positions, please speak to your group’s existing committee members or your can contact the staff in the Student Involvement and Development Centre at: suclubsandsocs@uclan.ac.uk

Fundraising Volunteers – Do you enjoy doing mad, crazy things all in the name of a good cause and want to raise money in the process? Well, fundraising may just be the thing for you! We will be holding fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for various charities and community groups in the local area. If you are interested in getting involved look out for the Student Involvement and Development Centre’s stand at the Clubs and Societies fair which have will more information about what will be going on this year.
