Womens' rugby win Back 2 Basics
Club take home £160 in Source competition
Union sports clubs have been competing against each other every Wednesday night in Source bar as the first round of this year’s Back 2 Basics tournament has been taking place.
Back 2 Basics was first run last year, and won on that occasion by the Mens' Rugby Union team. The theory behind it is that each club’s basic human qualities of strength, speed, endurance and intelligence are tested over a four week period.
The first quality to be tested in this round was strength and, as the only team to show up, Womens' Rugby Union won by default and took home the £30 weekly winners prize. Little did anyone know how important this would prove in the end!
Next up we tested the intelligence of our sports clubs and the Cricket team came out on top, closely followed by Mens' Rugby Union who pushed Rugby League down into 3rd place.
The following week we had an amazing turn out for the speed round. The favourites lived up to expectations as Mens' Rugby Union narrowly defeated Cricket with Rugby League in 3rd place.
Coming in to the final week it was still anyone’s game with Mens' Rugby Union and Cricket tied at the top with Rugby League and Womens' Rugby Union still also in contention.
The final stage was endurance. This was to be tested by seeing who could balance for the longest on the WKD bucking bottle. Mens' Rugby Union posted the most competitors but despite this they failed to finish in the top 3, Rugby League also threw caution to the wind and managed a third consecutive 3rd placed finish.
Despite being strong contenders for the overall win Cricket didn’t show up and missed their chance at claiming the £100 top prize. This week the girls stole the show. Jennie Spiller posted an impressive time of 32.13 seconds for the Trampoline Club and secured 2nd place for them. Remember the Womens' Rugby Union Club? Megan Tory clocked 34.41 seconds riding the bottle to not only claim top spot that week but also to secure the overall win!
Here are the final positions and the amount of money won by each club over the tournament:
1st - Womens' Rugby Union - £160
Joint 2nd - Mens' Rugby Union and Cricket - £90 each
4th - Rugby League - £30
5th - Trampoline - £20
Back 2 Basics will be back in 2010. Back 2 Basics is part of the Union's Back 2 You initative, allowing sports clubs to get money back for what they buy in the Union's bars and by attending Promo.
