Give It A Go’s Salsa night proved to be a huge success with over fifty participants enjoying an evening of dancing, nibbles and free cocktails, reports Lucy Spaven.

Salsa is a simple, informal and very versatile style of dance from the Caribbean. It is a fusion of many other dance styles including the Mambo, Rumba and Cha Cha Cha.

Former student, Bruce Chenn, 26, said:  "I’ve never tried Salsa dancing before but was interested in learning. The free cocktail was good; I didn’t expect to get one!"

After loosening up on arrival with the cocktails, the students were shown a quick demonstration by two salsa instructors in the large open space outside the Atrium Cafe.  They then learnt the moves for themselves step by step.

Having learnt the basics as a group, they split up into pairs to roll their hips with a partner.

Watch UCLan students giving salsa dancing a whirl

There are countless venues all over the UK that host Salsa nights which could be good news for 19-year-old police and criminal investigation student, Dean Hallworth.

He said:  "I’m hoping to learn some new moves tonight and could carry it on. I think Salsa night is a good idea and good value for money."

Dean attended the event with his girlfriend, Michaela Shelley, a first year nursing student.

She said: "We both looked at the activities on the programme and fancied giving this one a try."

After mastering the Salsa steps, the evening concluded with a Mexican-themed night in the Student Union bar, Source.

Give It A Go fortnight is a chance for UCLan students to try something new and different. It's no strings attached, you can just pay and play.
