Four new societies affiliated

First Aid, Disability, Mind Matters and Gaming welcomed

The Union has affiliated four new societies as it welcomes First Aid, Disability, Mind Matters and Gaming to the fold.

The new societies present another opportunity for students to get involved in activities and meet other students.

Tom Bailey, Activities and Participation officer, said: "This academic year has seen an increase in student uptake to both clubs and societies, however it is the societies themselves that have also increased in number. We have had four new societies affiliate with the Union with a possibility of a few more in the very near future.

"It's very exciting when a new society starts up as it increases student participation and offers students a new opportunity to try something out. I encourage anyone who wants to start a society to do so."

The First Aid Society aims to participate as a entity as a group of higher education students in St John Ambulance known as LINKS. Students will receive recognised first aid training that enables them to provide first aid services under the auspices of St John Ambulance. This enables students to develop their skills in interacting and supporting their community whilst acquiring transferable skills enhancing their own personal development and employability.

The Disability Society aims to be there for students who need help. Offer other students the chance to mentor them and billed condescendence of the students and many other things. We aim to visit 2-3 colleges/schools this year to show that there is hope for students with disabilities, and that you can go to university.

The Mind Matters Society aims to improve the mental well-being and to promote social inclusion for students and the wider community.  We are affiliated to Rethink- Time to change.

The Gaming Society aims to get students involved in games, including a cross-campus game of Asssasins.

Any student can join the societies by visiting the Student Involvement and Development Centre on the ground floor of the Students' Union. Membership to any of the societies is £5. You will need to bring your corporate/library card with you to join.

Students can set up a sports club or society if they can find 10 students who are their interest. Contact the Student Involvement and Development Centre on suclubsandsocs@uclan.ac.uk or call 01772894860 for more information.
