Recycling
Living as part of the local community can be quite a shock when you first arrive at university. Previously your parents might have sorted out the bins and increasingly it's not just the black bin that needs taking out.
In student halls you will be provided with places to put your rubbish and the University is investing heavily in recycling facilities. Make sure you make use of them and try to separate your plastic, newspapers and cardboard instead of just throwing them into black bags.

If you are living in Preston you fall under Preston City Council's refuse scheme. The council operates a fortnightly black bin collection and a fortnightly recycling bin collection. These operate on alternate weeks. Your landlord should provide you with information about the bin system when you move in.
Rubbish is the biggest complaint that local residents make about students so ensure that you know what day your bins are due to go out, make use of your recycling bins (you can have as many of them as you like!) and keep your bins in the back yard or garden - not out on the street.
The Union is passionate about reducing the environmental impact of students, so we've started a campaign. Find out how you can reduce, reuse and recycle and help make the world a greener place.
The council provides information for students about recycling, including the ability to request extra recycling bins and check your bin day.
