Drinking

As a student at UCLan there is the stereotype that you will drink, drink and then drink some more. This is portrayed in the media, sometimes expected by friends and family and often in the minds of new starters when they arrive at the accommodation weekend.

If you do like a drink then the Students’ Union is the best place to start. Source, the student-only bar, is right in the heart of the campus and can cater for everything from your after lecture pint to a full-blown night out. It’s essential to visit on a Saturday night, when instead of braving the centre of town the student population cram into Source and party ‘til the early hours.

53 Degrees is home to Promo, the biggest student night in Preston

53 Degrees hosts the biggest student night in Preston, Promo. 1,600 students party the night way with top tunes, cheap drinks, even cheaper entry and in the club venue there’s always a decent band playing – you never know you might just catch the next big thing.

Preston is a vibrant city with a great night-life, so if you do enjoy a drink and a dance you’ll never be short of a top night out. If it’s a drink with friends you fancy then there’s plenty of pubs and bars to chill out in and spend some time unwinding and catching up on all the stresses of student life.

However, the pressures of going out while a student can take their toll on your finances and your health – and potentially damage your prospects of graduating.

How can drinking damage my finances?

Drinking and going out costs money. On an average night out, you can find yourself spending £40/50. The student loan and the ‘Bank of Mum & Dad’ may not stretch to cover all your excesses, especially when there’s other things to pay for such as rent, books, food and other essentials.

What should I do if I look at my bank statement and it’s all disappearing with £40 cash withdrawals?

Stop drawing out the cash for a start! You can get budgeting advice from the Union’s Advice Centre. The University also provides an Access to Learning Fund which helps students who are struggling financially. You can also look at getting part-time work, The Bridge, the student employment service, has loads of jobs.
